Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Encourages You to Make Oral Health a Daily Priority

WARRENTON, Va. – A healthy smile is about more than just your teeth. It can help you eat, speak and feel your best at every age. Simple daily habits, like brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and visiting a dentist regularly, can prevent cavities, protect your gums and help you avoid painful dental problems. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District encourages you to make oral health a priority and take small steps each day toward a healthier smile.

“Oral health is an essential part of overall health and well-being, yet it is often overlooked in our daily routines,” said Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Director J. Carr, M.D. “At the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District, we encourage everyone to make oral health a daily priority by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, choosing healthy foods and drinks, and scheduling regular dental visits. By building these simple habits and helping families access preventive dental care, we can reduce oral health problems and support healthier communities throughout our district.”

Make dental hygiene a daily habit.

  • Brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and a soft toothbrush.
  • Floss daily to remove food and plaque between teeth.
  • Help children brush and spit out toothpaste.
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks; choose fluoridated water.

Brushing and flossing help remove plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Plaque that stays on teeth can harden into tartar, which only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove.

Keep up with dental checkups and cleanings

Visit a dentist regularly, even when your teeth do not hurt. Ask how often you need checkups and cleaning. These visits help find cavities and gum problems early. Dental checkups may also reveal signs of other health problems that need further testing or care and help detect oral cancer early.

Contact your dentist if you have tooth pain, swollen or bleeding gums, or ongoing bad breath.
